Categorization Rules

Every tracked session is matched against rules that map an app name, website domain, or window title to a category. The Categories screen has four tabs for managing this.

  • Built-in rules cover common apps and sites out of the box.
  • Your rules (per-user) always take priority over built-in/global ones, so you can reclassify anything.
  • For browsers, Kshan extracts the domain from the window title/URL so you can have different categories for different websites, not just "Chrome" as a whole.
  • Activity that doesn't match any rule is queued for classification and shows up as "Uncategorized" until you assign it a category (or a rule is added to match it automatically next time).

The four tabs​

  • Apps — one row per tracked application, with a dropdown to instantly change its category.
  • Websites — one row per tracked website domain, same instant-override dropdown. A site only appears here after Kshan has actually tracked a visit to it. A quick pick here applies to that domain across every browser; to classify the same domain differently per browser (e.g. github.com as Work only in Chrome), use Advanced Rules instead.
  • Categories — one row per category (Coding, Entertainment, Social, etc.) with a Focus / Work / Neutral / Distraction selector. This is what actually feeds your Focus Quality Score — categories are neutral by default, and it's up to you to decide, for example, whether YouTube counts as Work (video creator) or Distraction (everyone else). An overridden row shows a reset action to restore the default.
  • Advanced Rules — build compound rules (app name + website domain + window title together) for precise matching, and audit every rule currently in effect — both yours and Kshan's built-in ones.

Adding a rule​

Go to Categories → Apps / Websites / Advanced Rules and add a rule by app name, domain, or title keyword, then choose which category it should map to.

note

Reclassifying an app, site, or category only affects stats computed after the change — it doesn't retroactively recalculate days that already completed.
